Did you know that the repositioning of Houston Center called for the creation of three new greenspaces? In total, 24,000 square feet of pedestrian and greenspace was added along with 162 trees across five species including Cedar Elm, Live Oak, Olive, Bald Cypress, and Natchez Crape Myrtle.
In celebration of Earth Month, Brookfield Properties is proud to share how we have implemented sustainable solutions – like the Houston Center greenspaces – across our portfolio.
Recognitions, certifications, and designations
Our environmental and operational best practices have led to recognition, certifications, and designations from all over the globe, including Houston Center being LEED Gold certified. 2 Houston Center, 3 Houston Center (formerly Fulbright Tower), and 4 Houston Center are Energy Star rated. In addition, the entire Houston office portfolio received a GRESB 5-star rating. As the industry leading ESG benchmark for real estate portfolios, Brookfield Properties scored 14 points above the average participant rating. Outperforming 83 percent of the 1,412 participants, Brookfield Properties earned the coveted 5-star rank exclusive to the top 20 percent of performers.
Enwave Energy Corporation
In February 2021, we announced our partnership with Enwave Energy Corporation, the largest core-competency district energy provider in North America, to provide cooling services to Houston Center. By replacing outdated systems and finding better efficiencies through incorporating Houston Center in Enwave’s larger district network, together we are reducing the complex’s carbon footprint, improving water conservation, energy usage, and more.
Madewell Recycling Program
Activated by Brookfield Properties has partnered with Madewell to organize denim drives across our buildings to promote the reduction of textile waste. You can trade in your old denim and receive a $20 off coupon for a new pair at our events in April. More details can be found on your Axiis app. Learn more about Madewell’s recycling program on their website and their partnership with Cotton’s Blue Jeans Go Green to create house insulation out of denim.
Lights Out Texas
We are so excited to once again be participating in Lights Out Texas, an initiative that aims to protect migrating birds by turning off all non-essential lights from 11 p.m. – 6 a.m. during the critical peak spring migration period from April 22 – May 12. During this time, we will be turning off the roof accent lights across our Houston portfolio.
Alvéole
We’ve also partnered with Alvéole, the urban beekeeping company, to provide much needed protection for honeybees. Urban beekeeping brings people together around an awe-inspiring experience through interactive, thought-provoking conferences and activities that allow for deeper conversations about sustainability. This sustainable solution inspires people and organizations to do more for the environment, with the added benefit of producing ultra-local urban honey.
When it comes to sustainability, we believe that building a better world for our communities begins with us. We are proud of our current sustainability efforts, and we plan to continue to be thoughtful in our future sustainability endeavors.
